I'm Kelsey, boudoir photographer at Rosewood Boudoir. Creating tasteful + romantic photographs that help you see your natural beauty.
I have a lot of boudoir blog posts about how to prepare for your boudoir session, today I wanted to talk about what to do during your session!
Here are my best tips for a great boudoir session to keep at the front of your mind during your session (don’t worry about memorizing them, I’ll remind you as needed!).
Almost regardless of what we’re doing, you’re going to want to have your toes pointed. This does a couple things. It elongates your legs and tones your calves. It also just gives your images an elegant and polished look!
We’re looking for soft hands, not clinched fists or rod straight fingers. Think about how you might leisurely “pet” a super soft blanket. That’s the vibe we’re going for!
One of the best ways to look natural in your photos is to move. I find most of my clients are used to holding a rigid pose for photos.
While this can work, it’s not the best option. After I walk you through a pose, I’ll always give your hands something to do, such as play in your hair, or slide up or down your body.
It’s my job to make sure your photos are sharp, so please feel free to move freely during your photos! If I need you to pause or move slower, I promise I’ll let you know!
For these photos, I asked Ms. S to simply play in the curtains. These were my favorites from the series of photos I took while she was moving freely.
Arched backs are a staple for boudoir photography. You’ll spend most of your session arching (with breaks in between!) so don’t forget to stretch!
When you arch your back, be sure you aren’t doing it by pushing your chest up and out. Instead, be sure you’re rotating your hips and booty backwards to create the curve in your spine from your hips. This method is more comfortable AND more flattering!
While I certainly provide coaching on your expression, I never undervalue smiles. Your fella loves your smile and I promise he thinks your laugh is sexy. Don’t feel like you have to shy away from laughing and smiling during your session! I also love soft smiles with no teeth.
Your comfort is always my top priority! Boudoir posing is a bit different (and more strenuous) from our normal posture, so sometimes you just need a minute to relax and shake it out. That is perfectly fine! Don’t be afraid to take a break for a minute if you need to. I’ll even shake it out with you!
At the end of the day, I’ll be walking you through everything and reminding you to point your toes and arch your back. Don’t worry if this seems like a lot to remember! I’ve always got your back.
All I ask is that you be present during your session and enjoy yourself. If you’re having a good time, that will 100% translate to your photos!
